A solid corporate culture of compliance has been developing in Brazil after enactment of the Clean Company Act of 2013 and the mega-operations such as Car Wash/Lava Jato. More than a formality vis-à-vis the government or a marketing tool, compliance has become the compass for corporate risk management as well as a mandatory credential for business: companies not prepared to demonstrate their readiness to avoid or adequately react to compliance risks quickly lose ground in the supply chain, both as suppliers and customers.
The Corporate compliance structures evolved well past the original topics of antibribery, anticorruption and anti-money laundering, and are nowadays responsible for regulatory adherence, security (internal processes, cybersecurity, data protection), behavior (moral and sexual harassment) and communication (interaction with regulators, investors, and other stakeholders).
Compliance has in practice become one of the hearts of the ESG agenda.
